Check-in Question Types

AndreiWritten by Andrei

What is this?

Check-in forms are built from individual questions, and each question has a type that determines how the client responds. Athli offers six question types: Text, Number, Rating, Yes/No, Multiple Choice, and Scale. Choosing the right type for each question ensures you collect useful, structured data from your clients.

Why is it useful?

Different questions call for different answer formats. Asking "How are you feeling?" works best as a text field, while "Rate your energy level" fits a rating or scale. Using the correct question type makes check-ins faster for clients to complete and easier for you to review and compare over time.

Step-by-Step Guide

Choosing the Right Type

  • Use Text when you want the client to explain something in their own words, such as how their week went or any concerns they have.
  • Use Number when you need a precise value you can track over time. Number questions can also be synced to metrics for automatic logging.
  • Use Rating when you want a quick subjective score, such as rating workout difficulty or recovery quality.
  • Use Yes/No for straightforward binary questions that do not need elaboration.
  • Use Multiple Choice when you want to limit answers to a specific set of options you define.
  • Use Scale when you want a slider that gives clients more granularity than a simple rating.

Marking Questions as Required or Optional

  1. Open the question in the check-in builder
  2. Toggle the Required switch on or off
  3. Required questions must be answered before the client can submit
  4. Optional questions can be left blank

Things to Note

  • Number-type questions can be linked to metrics for automatic data syncing
  • You can mix different question types within the same check-in
  • Changing question types on an existing template does not affect past submissions
  • Clients see question types rendered natively in their mobile app

FAQs

Can I change a question type after creating it?

Yes. Edit the question in the check-in builder and select a different type. Past submissions retain their original format.

Is there a limit to how many questions I can add?

There is no hard limit, but shorter check-ins tend to get higher completion rates from clients.

Can Number questions be linked to metrics?

Yes. Number-type questions can be synced to metrics so that client responses automatically log to the linked metric.

Do clients see the question type labels?

No. Clients see the appropriate input field (text box, slider, toggle, etc.) without the type label.
