Habit Units and Periods

AndreiWritten by Andrei

What is this?

When creating a habit, you can configure the unit of measurement, the tracking period, and the duration. These settings determine what clients see when logging, how often they track, and how long the habit runs. This article is a reference for all available options.

Why is it useful?

Not all habits are the same. "Walk 10,000 steps" needs a Steps unit and daily tracking, while "Run 15 km" might use a Weekly period with a km unit. Configuring the right unit and period makes tracking intuitive for clients and gives you meaningful data to review.

Step-by-Step Guide

Available Units

Habits support a range of units across different categories:

CategoryUnitsExample Habit
ActivitySteps, Times, Count"Walk 10,000 Steps", "Stretch 3 Times"
TimeMin, Sec, Hour"Meditate 10 Min", "Sleep 8 Hour"
Distancem, km, Mile"Run 5 km", "Walk 1 Mile"
Volumeml, l, oz, Cups, Drink"Drink 3 l of water", "8 Cups of water"
NutritionCal, g, mg"Eat 150 g protein", "2000 Cal intake"

Tracking Periods

The tracking period determines how often the client is expected to complete the habit:

PeriodDescriptionBest For
DailyThe habit resets every day and clients track completion each dayDaily routines like water intake, stretching, supplements
WeeklyThe habit target is tracked over the full weekWeekly goals like total distance run, gym sessions per week

Duration Settings

The duration controls how long the habit stays active for the client:

DurationDescriptionExample
DaysHabit runs for a set number of days"30-day water challenge"
MonthsHabit runs for a set number of months"3-month mobility program"
YearsHabit runs for a set number of years"Ongoing annual wellness habit"

How Units Affect the Client Experience

When a client opens a habit on their mobile app, the unit you chose determines the input they see:

  • If the unit is Steps, the client enters a number of steps
  • If the unit is Min, the client logs minutes spent
  • If the unit is Cups, the client logs cups consumed
  • The unit label appears next to the input field so the client knows what to enter

Things to Note

  • Choosing the right unit makes logging intuitive for clients. Use familiar units they understand.
  • Daily habits show daily completion on the calendar. Weekly habits show weekly progress.
  • Duration determines when the habit automatically ends. You can also manually unassign a habit at any time.
  • If you need to track numerical values with charts and trend lines, use Metrics instead of Habits.

FAQs

Can I change the unit on a habit after assigning it?

Yes. Edit the habit in the library and change the unit. Existing log entries keep their original values.

What is the difference between Daily and Weekly periods?

Daily habits expect completion every day. Weekly habits set a target for the entire week, giving clients flexibility on which days they log.

Can I set a habit to run indefinitely?

Set a long duration (e.g., 10 Years) to keep a habit active for an extended period.

What if the unit I need is not available?

Use the closest available unit. For example, use Count or Times for generic tracking that does not fit a specific category.
