Custom Exercises and Demo Videos

AndreiWritten by Andrei

What is this?

Athli comes with a large library of built-in exercises, each featuring professional demonstration videos sourced from MuscleWiki. In addition, you can create your own custom exercises with custom names, video uploads, or image uploads. Custom exercises appear in the exercise picker alongside the built-in library and are visible to your clients in the mobile app.

Why is it useful?

Every coach has signature exercises, variations, or equipment-specific movements that may not exist in a generic library. Custom exercises let you tailor the exercise database to your coaching style. Demo videos are especially valuable for remote coaching, as clients can see exactly how to perform each movement without needing a separate video call or reference document.

Step-by-Step Guide

Viewing Built-In Exercise Demos

  1. Open the Workout Builder and add any built-in exercise.
  2. Click on the exercise name or the video icon to view the demonstration video.
  3. The video shows the movement from multiple angles with professional quality.
  4. Clients see these same videos in the mobile app when they tap on an exercise during their workout.

Creating a Custom Exercise

  1. Navigate to the exercise library or open the exercise picker within the Workout Builder.
  2. Click the Create Custom Exercise button.
  3. Enter the exercise name (e.g., "Band-Assisted Nordic Curl").
  4. Select the target muscle group(s) and equipment used.
  5. Optionally, upload a demonstration video or image:
    • Video: Upload an MP4 or compatible video file showing the exercise.
    • Image: Upload a JPG or PNG image if a video is not available.
  6. Save the custom exercise. It is now available in your exercise library.

Using Custom Exercises in Workouts

  1. Open the exercise picker in the Workout Builder.
  2. Search for your custom exercise by name.
  3. Select it and add it to the workout like any built-in exercise.
  4. Configure sets, reps, weight, and other fields as usual.

How Clients See Demo Videos

When a client opens a workout in the mobile app and taps on an exercise, the demo video (or image) is displayed. This works for both built-in and custom exercises. Clients can watch the video before or during their set for technique reference.

Things to Note

  • Custom exercises are visible only to you and your clients. Other coaches on the platform cannot see your custom exercises.
  • Built-in exercise videos are provided by MuscleWiki and cannot be edited or replaced.
  • Uploaded videos should be concise (15-30 seconds) and clearly demonstrate the movement.
  • Supported video formats include MP4. Keep file sizes reasonable for faster loading on mobile devices.
  • You can edit or delete custom exercises from the exercise library at any time. Editing an exercise updates it across all workouts that use it.

FAQs

Can I replace the demo video on a built-in exercise? No. Built-in exercise videos are provided by MuscleWiki and cannot be modified. If you need a different video for a standard exercise, create a custom exercise with the same name and your preferred video.

Do clients need an internet connection to view demo videos? Videos are streamed, so an internet connection is required for initial playback. Once cached, they may be available offline depending on the device.

Can I add multiple videos to a single exercise? Currently, each exercise supports one demo video or image. For exercises requiring multiple angles, consider combining them into a single video before uploading.

What happens to workouts if I delete a custom exercise? Deleting a custom exercise may affect workouts that reference it. Review and update affected workouts before deleting a custom exercise.
